MICHELANGELO

September in Croatian National Theater in Zagreb:
3., 5., 7., 25. and 27., 2013 / Tickets sale from Avgust 26 at :http://www.hnk.hr/en/ticket_prices

Five-hundred hundred years after Michelangelo - Il Divino has finished the Sistine Chapel ceiling painting, this cornerstone work of High Renaissance art with nine scenes from the Book of Genesis and the large fresco The Last Judgement on the sanctuary wall,  theater director Tomaz Pandur in his upcoming project deals with introspection of the artist, sculptor, poet, architect and painter, his journey into the matrix of unconsciousness, following the shadows of his vision. Based on the play by famous croatian writer Miroslav Krleža from 1919, Tomaz Pandur directs a stage poem of his tormented personality that embodies the interior conflicts, paradoxes, and problems of the High Renaissance. A poem about stretched limits of the Classical form to their extreme, and evolving art in new directions. A stage poem about dramatic reinterpretation of Michelangelo's High Renaissance ideals, a renewed interest in science and technology, and a conflicted, multi-layered emphasis on human emotion and passion. Pandur is creating a Theater of El gran Teatro de Michelangelo Buonaroti, father and master of all the arts, theater of a man whose name has become synonymous with the word "masterpiece. A theater of an unmatched artist, the creator of works of sublime beauty that express the full breadth of the human condition. A theater of a man who painted with his brains and not with his hands. The theater, according to Arteaud, which is in no thing, but makes use of everything -- gestures, sounds, words, screams, light, darkness -- rediscovers itself at precisely the point where the mind requires a language to express its manifestations. To break through language in order to touch life is to create or recreate the theatre.

MEDEJA OPENS IN ZAGREB, CROATIA

CROATIAN NATIONAL THEATER IN ZAGREB proudly presents Tomaz Pandur's Medea, one of the best works of the great old Greek writer Euripides, is the story of love, envy, greed and revenge. Medea is not an ordinary woman. She is gifted with powers with which she makes men do incredible things, but when she feels threatened, her revenge is horrific. The tragedy Medea is a drama text that has never lost its relevance, just like Euripides’ other works that have significantly influenced European drama literature. The Greek classic writer was a great psychologist, an exceptional intellectual, a rebel against generally accepted canons .

The famous novel about families and their lives during war and peace that emerged from the pen of the great Russian writer Leo N. Tolstoy, does not only chronicle Russia during the Napoleonic wars, the love of the beautiful Natasha Rostova, the grief and sorrow of Andrei Bolkonsky, Pyotr (Pierre) Bezukhov and numerous other characters, but it also speaks about the sufferings and hopes, yearnings and pain of people caught in the net of great historical events. Irrational war devastations are in counterpoint to the scenes in Moscow and St. Petersburg in which we follow families whose lives will be permanently altered. The everlasting re-thinking about the meaning of love, murder, faith and death are raised from the perspective of numerous characters with whom we sympathise from the very first sentence.

Slovenian theatre director Tomaz Pandur has created a monumental production revolving around the perception of time exclusively for Staatsballett Berlin.

SYMPHONY OF SORROWFUL SONGS, the result of a cooperation between Tomaz Pandur and choreographer Ronald Savkovic premieres at Staatsoper Unter den Linden on the 24th of April 2010. Together with Vladimir Malakhov and dancers of Staatsballett Berlin Tomaz Pandur is encircling the “instance of theatre“, which is how he describes the quintessential quest of his work.

“It seems as if the theatre does not only brave the persistent challenge of time in every moment of its existence and addresses time‘s pressing questions, but also as if the theatre embodies the fascinating secret of time and visualizes it anew with every staging.“

Tomaz Pandur’s visually powerful, mystic and sometimes startling productions, such as his staging of Dante’s “Inferno“for Hamburg‘s Thalia Theater, Janacek’s “Aus dem Totenhaus“ for Oper Bonn or his artistic encounter with Nacho Duato and his esemble, blur the lines drawn between theater, musical theatre and dance. With SYMPHONY OF SORROWFUL SONGS, Tomaz Pandur and Staatsballett Berlin also embark on a journey through the landscapes of the Russian soul. In the light of the becoming and passing of creativity, an emotional, scenic cosmos unfolds. The atmosphere creates a link to the archaic realm of Russian icon painter Andrej Rjublow. Tomaz Pandur uses visual impulses extremly and uncompromisingly and incorporates dreams and the subconsciousness of his audience into the performance experience. He creates an atmosphere in which the individual personality of each dancer is accentuated and becomes distinguishable. The music of the production is mainly based on Henryk Górecki’s 3rd Symphony. This dark setting of a Polish prayer from the 15th century, also known as “symphony of sorrowful songs“, serves as an eponym for the production. The philosophy behind this unusual project will also be conveyed through words spoken by Hanna Schygulla.
